Harry Potter, The Complete Collection Books 1 to 7, Bloomsbury Adult Edition, First Edition Hardcovers with Dust Jackets, Gilded Titling on Spine. Seven black hardcovers, gilded titling on spine, and not a lightning bolt cartoon in sight. Lumos: this is the set grown-up readers first bought so they could read Harry on the Hogwarts Express train without explaining themselves.
In 2004 Bloomsbury did something no other publisher of the series had done. It reissued Harry Potter for adults. Same words, same translator free original English, but dressed in sober photographic jackets with gold foil lettering, gilded top edges and a portrait of the author on the back instead of a cartoon. The Adult Edition was aimed squarely at the commuter who loved the books and wanted a more sophisticated design of the classic series.
The jackets were designed by William Webb with cover photography by Michael Wildsmith, and the author portraits on the back boards are by Bill De La Hey. Each cover reduces an entire novel to a single object photographed against darkness: a raw red stone, a carved pair of serpents, a ruined tower across black water, a goblet burning blue, a bronze phoenix in flame, a battered potions book, a silver locket on slate. Everything is photographed, and the restraint is the whole point.
This is a complete run of all seven novels in hardcover, First Edition, First Adult Edition, with early printings 1-1. This set belongs to the collector who wants the complete British run, in hardcover without paying 1997 prices, and to the reader who simply thinks these are the handsomest jackets the series ever wore. The Adult Edition has been out of print for years. Complete matched runs in hardcover, with every dust jacket present and in fine or near fine condition, and the gilding still bright on the spines. Bloomsbury was founded in London in 1986 and is the original publisher of Harry Potter, having taken the first book when other houses passed on it. Every British edition of the series carries a Bloomsbury imprint.
The Adult Edition was the house's answer to a readership that had quietly grown up alongside Harry, and it has since become one of the most collected of all the Bloomsbury design lines. A Note on Collector Value. All copies of the book are First Edition, Bloomsbury First Adult Edition. Books one through four are early printings of third and fourth. The edition line is out of print, and a complete seven volume hardcover run with all jackets intact and in fine or near fine condition is markedly harder to assemble than any single volume suggests.
